Memorial Weekend Skincare Tips from Spa Director, Christina Frantzen

Posted by Ashleigh Tripp  |  May 27, 2011

If you’re like us (Heeeeello, sunny California!), we love the sun, and we love long holiday weekends even more! This weekend while you’re out and about, by the pool, or even road-tripping in the car, be sure to keep in mind safe sun practices. Our Spa Director, Christina Franzten, has some great tips for keeping your skin healthy while getting a dose of sunshine.

  • Use sunscreen with at least a 30 SPF or higher. Slather it on if your tanning in the sun, or walking around with exposed skin. Even if you’re cruising around in the car you still need the protection. Harmful UVB and UVA rays can penetrate, especially if your sun roof is open.
Christina Tip: The Well Spa carries a fantastic product, Sheer Physical UV Defense SPF 50 from Skinceuticals. The formula is groundbreaking, ultra-sheer, with no chemical filters! It can be used on all skin types, even very sensitive skin. Broad spectrum, high UV protection, and paraben-free.
  • Cover up. If you’re going to be working in the yard or spending time outdoors, wear long sleeves and pants. It seems counterintuitive, but covering your skin in light or pastel clothing keeps your body temperature down and will keep you cool. Remember a wide-brim hat too!
  • Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water and supplement with natural juices and beverages with electrolytes. You lose a lot of water when you’re playing, laying and enjoying the sun, so replenish frequently.
Christina Tip: Hydration is the key! Stay moisturized and hydrated after a weekend in the sun. Make sure to replenish your electrolytes and drink plenty of water over the weekend as well as once you return home. Make sure to apply a good moisturizer liberally to keep the skin hydrated and comfortable.
  • Recover. If you do get burned or turn pink, remember that Aloe Vera is your friend. Aloe Vera is also great as an anytime skin moisturizer.
Christina Tip: Try The Well Spa’s Aloe Sun Soother! Find refuge from the elements this Memorial Weekend and rehydrate sun-exposed skin with this soothing aloe treatment for the face and body. Provides instant relief for sunburn and smoothes skin that is dehydrated from the dry climate. Treatment duration is 45 minutes, and your skin will be bright and refreshed after.
