Acclaimed trumpet player Rick Braun returns to the Coachella Valley with his dynamic horn. Arguably one of the most versatile and entertaining instrumentalists of our generation, Braun has the ability to shift gears from smooth jazz, to funk, pop, R&B and straight ahead jazz. His talent has shared the stage with music legends such as Rod Stewart and Sade.

And if that's not enough, joining Braun will be the incredible pianist/composer Greg Karukas. Currently the music director for the world-famous Dave Koz Cruise, Karukas has led and performed with the top names in smooth jazz. When I was in Hong Kong during Chinese New Year I was exposed to Kumquats. The way they were given out and cared for in their use set an impression on me to this day. This weekend while you’re out and about, by the pool, or even road-tripping in the car, be sure to keep in mind safe sun practices. Our Spa Director, Christina Franzten, has some great tips for keeping your skin healthy while getting a dose of sunshine.

• Use sunscreen with at least a 30 SPF or higher. Slather it on if your tanning in the sun, or walking around with exposed skin. Even if you’re cruising around in the car you still need the protection. Harmful UVB and UVA rays can penetrate, especially if your sun roof is open.

Watch Chef Robert Nyerick prepare one of his favorite dishes, Pan Seared Scallops. Pair this with a bottle of your favorite Sauvignon Blanc and it’s a perfect light summer meal!

Ingredients

• 4 Jumbo Sea Scallops
• Organic Spring Mix (Frisée, Radicchio, Escarole, Endive)
• Oven Tomatoes
• Baby Artichokes
• Saffron Essence
• 1 pinch kosher salt and pepper to taste
• 2 tablespoon olive oil

Directions

1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sea scallops, and cook without moving the scallops for 1 minute.
2. Meanwhile, place salad mix, oven tomatoes, and baby artichokes on a plate.
3. Sprinkle pepper and salt onto the scallops, and continue cooking another minute until the scallops have browned on one side. Flip the scallops over, add more salt and pepper, and continue cooking until the scallops have browned on the other side, 1 to 2 minutes.
4. Place scallops in a preheated oven for about a minute.
5. Remove from oven and place on top of salad and pour saffron essence over the top and serve.
