Movie spots to visit near Palm Springs

With a sprawling desert and a high chance of sun, producers have favored Palm Springs as a movie set for decades. Check out these seven movies that each filmed scenes around this iconic landscape.

A Star is Born

Released in 2018, this highly anticipated musical drama starred Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper and was the third remake of the movie. Rockstar and alcoholic Jackson Maine helps young singer Ally find fame as his own career starts to fizzle out.

Where to visit

Palm Springs Convention Center was part of the set in the scenes where Cooper’s character is playing a gig at a pharmaceutical convention. Concert scenes were also filmed at Coachella Music and Arts Festival and Stagecoach Festival.

Getting there

From the hotel, Palm Springs Convention Center is a 30-minute drive. Coachella and Stagecoach Festival are both held at Empire Polo Club in April which is a 15-minute drive from the hotel.

Just Getting Started

This action-comedy with Tommy Lee Jones and Morgan Freeman was released in 2017. An ex-mob lawyer and ex-FBI agent must put their feud on the golf course aside in order to avert a mob hit.

Where to visit

Although set in Palm Springs, most of the filming took place in New Mexico. However, exterior shots of the desert were filmed and incorporated into the movie including the Palm Springs welcome sign, the windmills, and downtown shopping area.

Getting there

The Palm Springs welcome sign is a 30-minute drive from the hotel, as is the downtown area. It is a 6-minute drive between the two.

Mission: Impossible III

Tom Cruise and Michelle Monaghan starred in the third installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise where Agent Ethan Hunt and his fiancee are threatened by a ruthless arms dealer. The movie was released in 2006 in the action/adventure/thriller category.

Where to visit

The scene where the helicopter is navigating its escape was filmed in the San Gorgonio Pass wind turbine farm. For the best views, catch the Aerial Tram to the San Jacinto mountain.

Getting there

The San Gorgonio Pass is 45 minutes from the hotel and the aerial tram is a 35-40 minute drive. You can also do a windmill tour for exclusive behind-the-fence entry.

The Scorpion King

This action-adventure movie follows a desert warrior who kidnaps an evil army’s sorcerer after they threaten his native land. It was released in 2002 starring Dwayne Johnson and was directed by Chuck Russell.

Where to visit

Although the movie was set in ancient Egypt, a lot of filming was done in Palm Springs. To best capture the harsh rugged landscape, one of the main shooting locations was Anza-Borrego Desert State Park which offered sandy dunes, deep canyons, and jagged rock faces. You’ll recognize it from the scene with the fire ants where the king is buried neck-deep in sand next to the anthills.

Getting there

You can plan a day trip to the state park which is an hour and a half drive from the hotel.

Ocean’s Eleven

Premiering in 2001, this action movie was the first in the Ocean’s Trilogy and starred George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, and Matt Damon. It follows Danny Ocean and his team of criminal specialists as they set up a heist to rob three casinos simultaneously.

Where to visit

The Las Vegas home of Reuben Tishkoff was actually filmed in Palm Springs at number 999 North Patencio.

Getting there

The house is a 30-minute drive from the hotel but is a private residence so visitors should bear this in mind when visiting the area.

Rain Man

This iconic movie from 1988 follows selfish car dealer Charlie (Tom Cruise) who finds out he has an autistic brother after the death of his estranged (but wealthy) father. After finding out he’s left $3 million to the mental institution where Raymond (Dustin Hoffman) lives, Charlie decides to fight for custody of his brother so he can get his hands the money. The pair take a road trip back to LA which turns out to be a life-changing trip for both characters.

Where to visit

Near the start of the movie, Charlie and his girlfriend pass the San Gorgonio wind farm. Then at the end of the road trip, Charlie and Raymond stop at the convenience store which still exists in Palm Springs.

Getting there

Diamonds are Forever

The seventh movie in the James Bond series dates back to 1971 and follows James Bond (Sean Connery) to Las Vegas disguised as a diamond smuggler where he discovers his old enemy with a deadly plan to destroy Washington, DC.

Where to visit

The character Willard Whyte has a winter retreat in Palm Springs and this was filmed at Elrod House. This modernist building was designed by architect John Lautner and overlooks the city and Coachella Valley.

Getting there

This is a private residence located at 2175 Southridge Drive, 25 minutes from the hotel. Pass by the house on the Araby Trail, a 4-mile hiking track that also passes Bob Hope’s famous house.
